When the TV shows "No Signal" with an Amazon Signage Stick plugged in, the TV is usually on the wrong HDMI input. Press the TV remote's Input or Source button and step through each HDMI input. If none shows the stick, it is short of power or not seated in the port. Check those next.

"No Signal" is the TV's message, not the stick's. It means the TV gets no picture on the input it is showing. The stick (the "Fire Stick" behind the TV) can be running and playing on another input at the same time.

Why the TV shows No Signal

  • Wrong input. A cleaner pressed the Source button, someone plugged in a laptop, or a power cut sent the TV back to its default input.
  • No power to the stick. Its light is off, or it is powered from the TV's USB port. Amazon warns that TV USB ports have limited power output. Some TVs switch USB power off in standby, so the stick restarts every time the TV turns on.
  • Stick not fully in the port. A stick hangs from the port by its own weight and can work loose on a wall-mounted TV.
  • Something between the stick and the TV. An HDMI switch, splitter or extender that drops the picture, or does not support HDCP.
  • A resolution the TV cannot show. Amazon lists 2160p at 24, 25, 30, 50 or 60 Hz, and 1080p or 720p at 50 or 60 Hz. Very old or unusual displays may refuse all of them.

How to fix it

  1. Step through the inputs. Use Input or Source on the TV's own remote. Note the port number printed next to the stick.
  2. Check the stick has power. Plug its adapter into a wall outlet, not the TV. Wait two minutes for it to start.
  3. Reseat the stick. Push it fully into the HDMI port. If it sits at an angle, support it or use a short HDMI extension.
  4. Plug straight into the TV. Remove any switch, splitter or extender and test again.
  5. Try another HDMI port, then another HDMI cable if you use one.
  6. Restart the stick. Unplug its power for one minute, then plug it back in.
  7. Try another display. If the stick shows a picture there, the first display or its port is the fault.

If the picture appears but stops at the Amazon logo, or the screen stays black with no "No Signal" message, see stuck on logo or black screen.

Stop the input changing again

  • Set the TV's power-on input. Many TVs have a setting such as "Power On Source" or "Last input". Set it to the stick's HDMI port so a power cut does not move the TV off it.
  • Turn on HDMI-CEC. With CEC on, a player that wakes the TV can also make it switch to its own input. See HDMI-CEC not working. An HDMI switch in between blocks this.
  • Remove what nobody needs. If a games console or cable box shares the TV, staff will switch to it. On a signage TV, unplug it or move it to a TV that is not for signage.
  • Hide the remote. A remote left on the counter is the most common cause of a wrong input.

Where Brix fits

On a Signage Stick with HDMI-CEC, Brix reads the TV's state, so you see a wrong input from the office:

  • The screen's row turns amber and reads TV on another input, TV off or No TV found. The player is still online and playing, so the fault is at the TV, not the stick.
  • Keep the TV on this input switches the TV back when someone moves it to another input. You choose how often it checks, from every minute to every hour. It appears on TVs that report input control.
  • A TV off, or on another HDMI input alert opens in the CMS after the TV has been dark for 15 minutes, so a short switch to a laptop does not raise it. Add an alert rule if you want it by email.

Without HDMI-CEC on the TV, Brix cannot see the input or switch it back. The screen still plays, and live preview shows what the stick is sending, but not whether the TV shows it.

A screen on Brix's default Standard hours turns its TV off from 11:00 pm to 6:00 am on purpose. That shows as Off (scheduled), not a fault. See screen settings and display power.

FAQ

Is No Signal the same as an offline screen?

No. An offline screen has lost its connection to the signage software. A No Signal screen can be online and playing, with the TV on another input.
