What the little box behind the TV actually does

Both devices are the box behind the TV, the player that stores and plays your content. The Amazon Signage Stick is a commercial media player built on Fire TV. The Signage Stick runs signage software, such as Brix, from the Amazon Appstore.

BrightSign players run their own operating system, BrightSignOS, with separate setup and management tools. BrightSign designs that work for an AV installer, not a store manager with a browser.

What does setup involve?

Setup on the Amazon Signage Stick with Brix takes about 10 minutes. During the Stick's own on-screen setup, pick "Brix Signage." Then pair it in the CMS: go to Screens, select Add screen, and select Pair a hardware device.

BrightSign players need their own setup inside BrightSignOS, separate from any content management platform you add. BrightSign builds that process for an AV installer who already knows the system, not a store manager with a browser.

Who is BrightSign built for?

BrightSign is built for professional AV installs, such as a video wall. BrightSign's own site names video walls and frame-synced, multi-display installs as a core use. BrightSign lists customers such as GoPro, LG, Best Buy and Bose. BrightSign players are fanless and self-healing. BrightSign builds them to run unattended in sites such as museums, transportation hubs and large retail chains.

If you need a synchronized video wall or specialized AV equipment, BrightSign fits that work. That price buys hardware built for professional AV work, not simple per-screen signage.

BrightSign's own site also says its players connect to more than 200 certified content management partners. A 200-partner ecosystem lets an AV integrator standardize on BrightSign hardware across different clients, even when each client picks a different content management platform.

Who is the Amazon Signage Stick built for?

The Amazon Signage Stick is built for a single screen or a handful of screens in a store, office or restaurant. At $99.99, the Stick costs less than any BrightSign model. Setup needs no AV installer.

With Brix, a Signage Stick turns off the TV over HDMI-CEC outside Screen hours. The screen does not stay on all night by itself. Screen hours default to 6:00 am to 11:00 pm. You can set a screen to always on instead.

With Brix, you can reboot a Stick, change its Screen hours, and check what it is showing. All three happen from the CMS, without a store visit. For a rollout of 30 or more screens, Amazon provides the Sticks free, and Brix arranges this with Amazon.

What goes wrong when you pick the wrong one

Buying a BrightSign player for one store screen is the most common mismatch. The hardware costs four to thirteen times more than a Signage Stick, for video wall and AV features a single screen never uses.

Buying a Signage Stick for a video wall is the mismatch in the other direction. Brix does not sync playback across multiple screens into one video wall image today. A wall needs hardware and software built for that job, which is the case BrightSign makes for itself.

Where Brix fits

Brix runs on the Amazon Signage Stick. Brix does not run on BrightSign players.

For a single screen or a handful of screens, pair a $99.99 Signage Stick with Brix. Setup takes about 10 minutes. Software costs $8 per screen per month, billed monthly, or $6 per screen per month, billed annually. A 7-day free trial needs no card.

For a video wall or a large AV install with specialized equipment, a BrightSign player is the better choice.

FAQ

Does Brix run on BrightSign players?

No. Brix runs on the Amazon Signage Stick, Fire TV, and Android boxes such as the Walmart onn. Brix also runs on TVs with Google TV or Android TV built in, and on the Windows player. Brix has no BrightSign player.

Is BrightSign worth it for a single screen?

For one screen with no video wall and no specialized AV equipment, a BrightSign player costs more than you need to spend. A $99.99 Amazon Signage Stick with Brix covers that case for less.

What do you get for the extra cost of a BrightSign player?

BrightSign's own site points to video wall support, a fanless and self-healing design, and more than 200 certified content management partners. These features are for professional installers, not just for a screen in a single store.

Can I switch from BrightSign to the Amazon Signage Stick?

Yes, for signage that does not need BrightSign's video wall or specialized AV features. Buy a Signage Stick. During its on-screen setup, pick "Brix Signage." Then pair it in the CMS under Screens. Brix does not run on your existing BrightSign hardware.

What about a video wall?

Neither a single Signage Stick nor a single BrightSign player decides a video wall on its own. BrightSign's own site lists video walls as a core use for its players. Brix does not sync playback across screens into one wall image today, so the Signage Stick does not fit that job.
