"Roku Digital Signage: Apps, Free Options, Limits"

Yes, a Roku can run simple digital signage. Install a signage channel from the Roku Channel Store (OptiSigns, Quickesign and TVQue have one), pair it with the vendor's web dashboard, and set its screensaver so the sign comes back by itself.

It suits a slideshow of images on one screen. It is a poor fit for video, offline playback or a screen that must recover from a power cut with nobody around: Roku apps cannot start themselves at power-on, and they keep no content on the device after a restart.

Which signage apps run on Roku

Checked on each vendor's site and the Roku Channel Store.

OptiSigns

  • Price: $9 per screen per month billed annually, or $10 monthly (Standard).
  • Free option: No on Roku. Its free plan (3 screens) only runs on OptiSigns' own players, Windows, Linux and Raspberry Pi.
  • Roku app: Yes, a channel and a screensaver.
  • Strengths: Images, videos, documents, templates, playlists and schedules, portrait or landscape.
  • Watch out for: On Roku, no YouTube, social or news apps, no split screen, transitions, widgets, shuffle or background music. Its help centre advises keeping a Roku playlist under about 10 items or 100 MB, and recommends an Android stick or Chromecast instead when reliability matters.

Quickesign

  • Price: Paid plans per screen (Light, Standard, Pro, Enterprise), with annual billing cheaper.
  • Free option: Free trial, no card. No free plan.
  • Roku app: Yes. Roku is its main platform.
  • Strengths: Multi-zone layouts, weather and QR widgets on the higher plans. A free QESIGN screensaver and a TV Control app relaunch the sign if it exits.
  • Watch out for: The cheapest plan is full-screen slideshows only.

TVQue

  • Price: Free with a watermark; paid plans remove it.
  • Free option: Yes, with the TVQue watermark on screen.
  • Roku app: Yes, built for Roku TVs.
  • Strengths: Remote restart and status, portrait, overlay text. Aimed at cafes, schools and churches.
  • Watch out for: The watermark on the free plan.

Digital Sign (Bytewise)

  • Price: One-time purchase, no monthly fee.
  • Free option: No.
  • Roku app: Yes. It plays files from a USB drive (a folder named my-digital-sign), so it needs a Roku with a USB port: the Roku Ultra or a Roku TV.
  • Strengths: Works with no internet. You number files (01.jpg, 02.mp4) to set the order.
  • Watch out for: Every change means walking to the TV with a USB stick.

No Roku app: Yodeck, Play Digital Signage, ScreenCloud, Rise Vision, Kitcast. Play and ScreenCloud both say the Roku is not built for signage use.

Free digital signage on a Roku

  • TVQue is the only free cloud option, with a watermark.
  • A USB drive with Digital Sign costs a one-time fee and nothing after.

If you want free software with no watermark, the free digital signage software guide lists the options; none of the big free plans runs on Roku.

Set up a Roku as a sign

  1. Install the signage channel from the Roku Channel Store and pair it with the dashboard.
  2. Make it start by itself. Roku has no setting to open a channel at power-on. Set the vendor's screensaver: Settings > Theme > Screensavers, pick it, and set the wait time to the shortest option. OptiSigns' screensaver shows images only; video needs the channel open.
  3. On a Roku TV, turn off Auto power savings (Settings > System > Power > Auto power savings). Left on, it turns the TV off after 4 hours with no remote press, in the middle of your opening hours.
  4. Power a Roku stick from its own adapter, not the TV's USB port. OptiSigns names underpowered sticks as a top cause of crashes.
  5. Use Ethernet if you can. Among Roku players, only the Roku Ultra has an Ethernet port.

The limits nobody mentions

  • No offline playback after a restart. Roku stores an app's downloaded files in memory, which a reboot clears. After a power cut with the internet down, the screen has nothing to show. Only the USB-drive route avoids this.
  • Small storage, small playlists. Keep content to a few images and short clips.
  • Roku updates itself. Roku OS updates install on their own, and from Roku OS 12 Roku enforces stricter power and screensaver rules, which changed how signage screensavers behave.
  • A Roku account and a consumer TV. Each Roku needs a Roku account to activate, and most living-room TVs are not rated for all-day use. See using the TVs you already own.

Roku or a signage player?

Roku players list from $39.99 (Streaming Stick) to $149.99 (Roku Ultra) on roku.com, and are often on sale. That makes them tempting, but for a sign that must run all day, a player built for it is usually worth the difference:

  • Keep the Roku for one screen, images only, where someone can press the remote if it stops.
  • Use a signage player for video, more than a couple of screens, or any screen nobody checks. The $99.99 Amazon Signage Stick opens the signage app itself at power-on and keeps content on the device. An Android TV box or a Fire TV Stick costs less and also keeps content offline. See cheap digital signage software for the lowest-cost pairings.

Where Brix fits

Brix has no Roku app, and Roku has no web browser for the Brix web player. If you want to keep your Rokus and only show images, use OptiSigns, Quickesign or TVQue.

If you are choosing a player, plug a $99.99 Amazon Signage Stick into the TV and run Brix on it:

  • Cost: $6 per screen per month billed annually, or $8 monthly. 7-day trial, no card.
  • Starts itself: the Stick opens Brix when it powers on. No screensaver trick.
  • Offline: a Stick reports about 12 GB of usable storage, and Brix lets content use up to half of it, so video keeps playing through an internet outage.
  • Remote control: reboot, see a screenshot of the screen, and turn the TV on and off on a schedule, through Amazon's remote management on the Stick.
  • Switching: we move your content, playlists and screens from your current service for you, free, usually in a day.
