Yes, an Apple TV can run digital signage. Install a signage app from the Apple TV App Store (Kitcast, OptiSigns and Rise Vision all have one), pair it with that vendor's web dashboard, and lock the Apple TV to that app so it reopens by itself after a power cut.
The catch is the lock. Without Single App Mode on a supervised Apple TV, the box boots to the home screen after an outage and your screen shows Apple's menu until someone picks up the remote.
What you need
- An Apple TV 4K. $199 for the Wi-Fi model (64 GB) or $249 for Wi-Fi + Ethernet (128 GB) on apple.com. Buy the Ethernet model for signage: it is the one Apple Configurator can set up (see below), and a cable beats Wi-Fi on a wall.
- A signage app with a tvOS version, plus its subscription.
- A way to supervise the Apple TV: a Mac with the free Apple Configurator, or Apple Business Manager plus a device management (MDM) service such as Jamf or Mosyle.
- Power and HDMI at the TV.
Which signage apps run on Apple TV
Checked on each vendor's site and the US App Store.
Kitcast
- Price: $7 per screen per month billed annually, or $9 monthly (Starter). Pro is $10 annually or $14 monthly.
- Free option: No free plan. 14-day trial, no card.
- Apple TV app: Yes, native.
- Strengths: The first signage app on the Apple TV App Store (2015). Offline playback on every plan. Pro adds Single App Mode and control through Jamf, Mosyle and Kandji.
- Watch out for: Device management features are Pro only.
OptiSigns
- Price: $9 per screen per month billed annually, or $10 monthly (Standard).
- Free option: No on Apple TV. Its free plan (3 screens) only runs on OptiSigns' own players, Windows, Linux and Raspberry Pi.
- Apple TV app: Yes, native (tvOS 14 or later).
- Strengths: 100+ content apps. Works with Jamf Pro for larger rollouts.
- Watch out for: Budget for the paid plan from screen one.
Rise Vision
- Price: $11 per display per month billed annually ($132 a year), or $12 monthly.
- Free option: No. 14-day trial.
- Apple TV app: Yes, native (tvOS 16.1 or later).
- Strengths: Strong in schools. Works with Jamf and Mosyle.
- Watch out for: Rise itself says its features are more limited on Apple TV, with no screen sharing, and recommends it for simple content running 8 to 12 hours a day, 5 days a week.
ScreenCloud
- Price: $20 per screen per month billed annually, or $24 monthly (Core).
- Free option: No. 14-day trial.
- Apple TV app: No. Its iPhone/iPad app mirrors to an Apple TV over AirPlay, so each screen ties up an iOS device too.
- Strengths: Sells its own players (PIXI, $95) if you later drop the Apple TV.
- Watch out for: ScreenCloud's own Apple TV page warns AirPlay is not reliable for hour-after-hour use.
Yodeck, Play Digital Signage, NoviSign: no Apple TV app.
Is there free digital signage for Apple TV?
Only for a single screen you update by hand.
- Screen Canvas is free to download. You design a slide on the TV with the remote. The free version adds a watermark, limits text and backgrounds, and takes no custom images; a one-time purchase removes the limits. There is no web dashboard for several screens.
- key Digital Signage, Continuity Digital Signage and SIGMONDO are free to download from the App Store, with in-app purchases for the features a business needs.
- AirPlay from a Mac or iPhone playing a slideshow costs nothing, but that device must stay on, awake and nearby. Fine for a one-day event, not for a permanent sign.
None of the multi-screen services with a real free plan (Yodeck's one free screen, OptiSigns' three) allow an Apple TV on it. For more free options on other players, see free digital signage software.
How to make an Apple TV run 24/7
- Get the Apple TV supervised. Two routes:
- Apple Configurator (free, needs a Mac): connect the Apple TV by Ethernet to the same network as the Mac, choose Paired Devices, click Pair and type the six-digit PIN shown on the TV. The $199 Wi-Fi model has no Ethernet port, so this route needs the $249 model.
- Apple Business Manager + MDM: buy from Apple or an authorised reseller so the serial number lands in your Apple Business Manager account, assign it to your MDM, and the Apple TV enrolls itself on first power-on.
- Install the signage app and pair it with the vendor's dashboard.
- Start Single App Mode for that app. In Apple Configurator: Actions > Advanced > Start Single App Mode. Apple's own note: the app reopens immediately after the device restarts.
- Turn off sleep. Settings > General > Sleep After > Never, or push a profile from your MDM.
- Test a power cut. Pull the plug, plug it back, and time how long the TV takes to show content again.
The limits nobody mentions
- Offline content can be wiped. Apple gives a tvOS app only 500 KB of storage it keeps for sure. Everything else, including downloaded videos, sits in a cache tvOS may delete when space runs low and the app is not running. If the internet is down after a restart, the screen may have nothing to play.
- No web pages. tvOS has no browser and no web view for apps. Web pages, live dashboards, HTML widgets and YouTube embeds work only if the vendor rebuilt them natively. That is why web-based signage players do not run on Apple TV at all.
- No on/off schedule for the TV. tvOS can wake the TV over HDMI-CEC, but has no setting to turn it off at closing time and on in the morning.
- Every app update goes through Apple's review. A vendor's fix reaches your screens on Apple's timetable.
- A consumer TV behind it. Most living-room TVs are not rated for all-day use. See using the TVs you already own.
When an Apple TV is the right player
- Your IT team already manages Apple devices with Jamf, Mosyle or Kandji. The Apple TV then enrolls like a laptop, and the Configurator and supervision steps above come free with the setup you have.
- You already own the Apple TVs and the content is simple: images and video on a fixed loop.
For everyone else, a player built for signage costs less and does more. The $99.99 Amazon Signage Stick is half the price of the cheapest Apple TV 4K, opens your signage app by itself when it powers on, and needs no Mac or MDM. A Fire TV Stick costs less again, with fewer remote controls.
Where Brix fits
Brix has no Apple TV app, and tvOS has no browser for the Brix web player either. If you want to keep your Apple TVs, use Kitcast or OptiSigns.
If you are choosing hardware, plug a $99.99 Amazon Signage Stick into the TV instead and run Brix on it:
- Cost: $6 per screen per month billed annually, or $8 monthly. A Stick plus a year of Brix costs less than one $249 Apple TV 4K.
- Remote control: reboot, see a screenshot of what is on screen, and turn the TV on and off on a schedule, through Amazon's remote management on the Stick.
- Offline: a Stick reports about 12 GB of usable storage, and Brix lets content use up to half of it.
- Setup: pairing a Stick with Brix takes a median of 2.6 minutes across the Signage Sticks running Brix. No Mac, no MDM.
- Switching: we move your content, playlists and screens from your current service for you, free, usually in a day.
